Hawaii Hospitals

There are 29 licensed hospitals in the State of Hawaii, but most of the higher acuity hospitals are located in Honolulu (Oahu). Outer island hospitals tend to have less resources and are not able to care for specialized patients who need extensive work-up and treatment. Patients from the Big Island, Lanai, Molokai, Niihau, and Kauai are usually flown by Air Ambulance to Oahu to receive specialized care. With the growth of the population in Maui, the State has upgraded its facilities on Maui which results in less transfers to Oahu, but really sick patients from Maui are still flown to Oahu after being stabilized.
